Being so close to inspirational women has allowed me to adapt to the qualities in each I find admirable.
When reflecting on what makes me a strong woman I initially thought “I’m not”, which caused me to really think.
I AM a strong, independent, caring, optimistic, polite, hard working woman. I have had many experiences that have shaped who I am, but no experience measures up to the love and support of those around me. Looking up to my Mother and Mimi for the last 27 years has shaped me into the woman that I am today. I have seen my Mimi endure hardships in all aspects of her life; relationships, health, finances and yet continue to put everyone, and I mean everyone, before herself. She is one of the most caring, selfless, tenacious women I know. My mother has always been my best friend and voice of reason. She has taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to, but always encourages me to think of every aspect of the “big idea”. She has given me comfort in life being unexpected, it doesn’t always go according to plan and that’s okay. They both choose to see the good in everyone and reassure me that anything is possible!
Being put in a situation to step up and guide my best friend to a safe place really woke me up to the fact that I am stronger than I think I am. Every woman experiences insecurities but my best friend has given me the confidence that just because I’m small doesn’t mean I can’t stand up for myself or those I care for. She was in a difficult situation that many people in her shoes would not resolve until it was too late. When she came to me with the issue I was confident enough to give her my honest view on the situation and take action without worry. Seeing how she reclaimed her life after a three-year hardship gives me strength every day. Knowing her story, the woman she is and all of her vast qualities inspires me that there isn’t anything I can’t do.
All three women have aided in my self-esteem, resiliency, and acceptance of who I am. Without these strong female role models by my side I would not have grown into the secure woman that I am today. Being so close to inspirational women has allowed me to adapt to the qualities in each I find admirable. I owe being a strong woman and all that I am to the opportunities, support, and knowledge that these three women have given me.
I’ve discovered it’s not “what” that makes me a strong woman but who.
